In an increasingly complex geopolitical and economic landscape, Europe’s external competitiveness depends not only on strong internal policies but also on the credible, well-structured representation of European business in third markets. As the European Union intensifies its global engagement, the need for a coherent and collective business voice beyond our borders has never been more critical. European Business Organisations (EBOs) play a vital role in this ecosystem by providing EU Delegations with a structured interface to the European private sector abroad, ensuring that companies can engage collectively with local authorities and stakeholders.
On behalf of the EBO Worldwide Network (EBOWN), we are pleased to share this overview of European Business Organisations to support a deeper understanding of their role in third markets and their strategic connection to our global network. An EBO is an independent, business-led, and non-profit association established in a non-EU country to represent European companies operating in that market. Formally recognised by the respective EU Delegation, EBOs provide a professional platform where regulatory concerns, market barriers, and investment conditions are addressed collectively and constructively. These organisations represent Europe as a whole—bringing together multinationals and SMEs under a single, coherent platform to promote European standards and responsible business conduct.
Through EBOWN, these organisations are connected globally, enabling the exchange of best practices and a more unified representation of European interests across non-EU markets. With a presence in over 59 key markets, EBOWN amplifies local market insights directly to EU policymakers in Brussels, facilitating a coordinated approach to internationalisation and economic diplomacy. This attached note provides a concise explanation of how EBOs function on the ground and how EBOWN contributes to strengthening this ecosystem to reinforce the collective voice of European business internationally.
We trust that this overview serves as a useful reference for EU institutions, Delegations, and partners, as we remain committed to supporting a constructive European business voice in close cooperation with all EU stakeholders
